Start the New Year with some BMI know-how

There’s never been a better time to know your Body Mass Index (BMI) and kick off the New Year with a little health care know-how. “Your BMI is an estimate of your body fat, based on your height and weight (AARP.org).” According to LifeHealth co-founders, Margot Langstaff and Elisa Hamill, your BMI is one of the three most important numbers you need to know about your body in order to manage your health effectively.  (The other two measures are blood pressure and cholesterol. Watch for future blogs about these.)  Langstaff and Hamill go on to report that the typical American diet is responsible for most of the preventable diseases, including: 91% of diabetes, 82% of heart disease, and 71% of colon cancer. A BMI measure of 30 or greater translates into a greater risk of death by 50-150%!  A well-rounded exercise program approved by your doctor is a great way to take your first step toward lowering your BMI below 30.  Since many people spend more than half of their waking hours on the job, it’s important to think about ways in which you can make smart choices on your lunch hour or in the office. The healthier you are, the happier and more productive you are.
